re: food inc

Everyone in this country should watch this movie...learn how/why/where you food is coming from and why you should not eat at mcdonalds, why you shouldn't buy organic food at walmart, etc.   Probably why most of america should be a vegetarian, although if you read enough even corporate vegetables are awful.

Summer is here..sort of

Finally got to pick my first tomato from my garden yesterday. It was delicious. Soon we will be featuring all kinds of local (mostly home) grown vegetables. The summer squash and zucchini are pouring in..the tomatoes are starting..and the corn is growing by leaps and bounds. We've also started picking our own raspberries.

Some items we'll be making: zucchini streusal mufins, tomato pesto tarts, corn chowder, roasted vegetables, etc.

I'll post some pictures soon!!

regarding not picking up items

Just really need to vent about people not picking up orders. Last week we did a large cake (14" for 50 people). Tried and tried repeatedly to reach customer when they failed to pick up the cake..no response. Left a message asking her to please call us on monday regarding the cake. Never heard from her. My husband left a "testy" message on her machine, thanking her for wasting our ingredients, time, and money. 5 minutes pass (during which time I am sure she was listening to him leave the message), she calls up and says he should be ashamed of himself..she had an emergency and couldn't pick up the cake but was going to come down to the bakery.

I don't understand people who fill soooooo justified in not paying for an order they have placed..I always want to ask them how they would feel if they showed up for their "special" cake but I had been "too busy" to make it.

Anyone who doesn't like the new policy of deposits on all cakes (even ones ordered over the phone) has mrs. f---man to thank!!!

Unfortunatly these are the customers I remember!!!

banning transfats in needham

Hey...I'm all for healthier options but can someone explain to me how suet, lard, palm oil and soybean oils are a better way to go than margarine or shortening. I got some samples of transfat free margarine and it has twice the saturated fat that a butter/margarine blend does..
Isn't moderation the key....

a few of our cakes

I've been busy trying to create a basic cake photo album. This will contain pictures and descriptions of our basic cakes (not custom decorated cakes) to give everyone a better idea of what the cakes look like and hopefully inspire people to try something other than vanilla cake with buttercream.

Cupcakes...cupcakes...cupcakes

Some yummy cupcakes we had this week

The S'mores cupcakes were a big hit (graham cracker cakes filled with homemade marshmallow and chocolate custard..topped with more marshmallow that I torched)

hen everyone's favorite..our take on "hostess" cupcakes (but much better). Rich chocolate devil's food cake filled with homemade marshmallow creme and topped with dark chocolate ganache:

Finally some cupcakes we did for a customers bookclub meeting (the book was the zookeepers wife): They were strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate.

NEW ITEMS!!

Here are a few of the new items we had on Friday....

First we have some new rolls to go with the soup and salads....these are healthy harvest rolls....made with bulgar wheat, oatmeal, whole wheat flour, flaxseeds, etc....Delicious!!

Next is a chocolate malt cake with milk chocolate ganache...we also had cupcakes like this. The cake was yummy with a light taste of malt. I had a customer ask me what malt was...hasn't this been around for 100 years (it's like asking what vanilla or chocolate tastes like...)Then she made a face like I had said the cake was chocolate "dirt" cake....really, I know we are in the suburbs but can't people broaden their horizens a little bit. I assured her it tasted wonderful but she wanted a "plain" chocolate cake. The joys of unadventurous eating!!!!

Lastly this is a christening cake we did for our good customer Kathy R.

This coming week look for: S'mores cupcakes...(graham cake, filled with chocolate and marshmallow, topped with chocolate & more marshmallow)MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
